As of 1 January 2022 the number of units entered was 2,227. The total tonnage entered was approximately 64 million gross tons. Nordisk also offers cover for tonnage under construction, and there were 57 newbuildings entered as of 1 January 2022.The number of new cases opened in 2021 was 1,742. Most of the ocean-going fleet operated by Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish interests is covered by Nordisk, as well as vessels operated from elsewhere in Europe, Singapore, the USA and several other countries. The units entered with Nordisk represent most types of tonnage and include bulk carriers, oil, chemical and gas tankers, passenger vessels, ro-ro ferries, car carriers, container vessels, offshore service and supply vessels, as well as drilling rigs, accommodation platforms and FPSO units.
Nordisk’s membership fees are based on vessel type, trade as well the size of vessels. The fees are re-negotiated annually based on performance of the member’s portfolio of cases with the association.
It is possible to enter a newbuilding contracts for vessels to be constructed with reputable shipyards. The fee covers all legal problems that may arise in connection with the building contract, such as disputes with the shipyard during the building period and on delivery, and guarantee claims against the yard or subcontractors after delivery.
Nordisk also enters into consultancy agreements, on a retainer basis, with brokers and others who do not enter individual vessels.
As a mutual association, members can in line with the rules face supplementary calls in case of years with poor financial performance. As a consequence of Nordisk’s strong financial position, no calls for supplementary funds have been required since 1985.
