FD&D and beyond

Nordisk Skibsrederforening (Nordisk Defence Club) is a mutual legal services provider and freight, demurrage and defence (FD&D) club.

Our members consist of companies with high ethical standards and solid track records, and we are very careful in making sure potential new members will fit with the existing membership. While we are open to members from around the world, our primary focus is on Northern Europe, Singapore and Asia, and North America. Nordisk members gain access to very solid FD&D, as well as a wide range of legal services spanning all aspects of shipping and offshore maritime law. The scope of services is significantly wider than that provided by FD&D insurance provided by P&I clubs.

A hallmark is that we have a full shipping law firm inhouse, whereby most cases are handled by our own team and without deductibles. Our team of lawyers offers a collective 400 years of shipping law experience. We work closely with the members to help resolve issues before they turn into conflicts, often discussing matters in the full team to ensure we do not miss an argument that could help our member succeed. We regularly act in courts and arbitration cases, either ourselves or with our network of shipping lawyers in spanning the globe.

Our aim is to be of as much use to the members as possible, including by quickly directing resources towards new and developing law and risks that can cause concerns for members. Recent examples include emissions regulations and geopolitical changes as exemplified by the Houthi attacks on ships and the development of a the ”dark fleet” and increasingly a “parallel fleet”.
